Drivetime Patient Productions

Drivetime-Radio began in 1988 with a simple idea. To make high-quality medical education easier to access.

A trusted voice in Australian healthcare

Drivetime-Radio was founded by a GP, Dr John D’Arcy, and a radio producer. Together they combined clinical expertise with professional storytelling to create something different.

At a time when most education was written and time-consuming, they chose audio. Practical, engaging and easy to fit into a busy day.

Because medical education in Australia is governed by the Medicines Australia Code of Conduct, content could not be broadcast publicly. Instead, the first Drivetime-Medical (now Drivetime-GP) programs were sent directly to GPs across the country on cassette tape.

Nearly four decades of experience

While the format has evolved from cassette tapes to CDs and now private podcasts, the purpose has remained the same.

For almost 40 years, Drivetime-Radio has produced audio interviews with leading Australian clinicians, sharing insights on conditions, treatments, guidelines and real-world patient care.

Today, these programs are used by GPs, specialists and pharmacists across Australia as a trusted source of education.

Since those early days, we have grown into an experienced team of clinicians, medical writers and producers, and that long-standing relationship with the medical community sits at the heart of everything we do.

Why we created Drivetime-Patient

Over time, the doctors we work with told us something important…

Patients are often left trying to make sense of complex health information on their own. In short consultations, it is not always possible to cover everything. Online, information can be overwhelming, outdated or not relevant to the Australian healthcare system.

Drivetime-Patient was created to help change that.

It brings the same trusted Australian clinicians from our professional programs directly to patients. Using audio, we explain conditions, tests and treatments in a way that is clear, structured and easy to follow. All content is grounded in evidence and developed and reviewed by clinicians to ensure it is accurate, relevant, and designed for real-world care in Australia.

Our aim is not to replace your doctor.

Instead, we aim to support the conversations you have with them, helping you feel more informed, more confident, and better prepared to make decisions about your health.

Patients deserve clear, reliable information they can trust

A small piece of our story

There is even a small piece of Australian music history tied to Drivetime-Radio.

Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins has a family connection to Drivetime-Medical – her father was a GP in Victoria who listened to the program. One of his Drivetime-Medical cassette tapes was later recorded over with an early demo that was sent to the ABC and helped launch her career.

A fun piece of trivia from the Drivetime-Radio archives.

Looking ahead

As we launch Drivetime-Patient, our focus remains the same as it was in 1988, delivering trusted, evidence-based information for those who need it most.
